Where is Emerald Cave?
Emerald Cave is located within the Black Canyon section of the Colorado River, just north of Willow Beach Marina in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Although it’s only about an hour from the Las Vegas Strip, the weather here can be surprisingly different from downtown Las Vegas.
The canyon walls provide shade throughout portions of the day, while the Colorado River remains a refreshing 52–54°F year-round because the water is released from the bottom of Hoover Dam.
Spring (March–May)
Spring is one of the best times to kayak to Emerald Cave.
Average air temperatures:
Morning: 50–65°F
Afternoon: 70–90°F
Spring brings comfortable temperatures, blooming desert landscapes, active wildlife, and generally pleasant paddling conditions. You’ll often spot desert bighorn sheep, bald eagles, and a variety of desert birds along the canyon walls.
It's also one of our favorite seasons to guide. Comfortable temperatures make it easy to enjoy the entire experience—from paddling and wildlife watching to swimming and exploring the canyon.
This is one of the busiest times of year, so booking in advance is recommended.
Summer (June–August)
Summer is hot—but it’s also when many visitors enjoy escaping the city and cooling off in the Colorado River.
Average air temperatures:
Morning: 80–90°F
Afternoon: 100–115°F
Don’t let the desert temperatures scare you. Guests are often surprised by how comfortable it feels once they're out on the water. The cool river, occasional shade from the canyon walls, and opportunities to swim make kayaking one of the best ways to spend a summer day near Las Vegas.

The intense summer heat begins to fade while the river remains refreshing for swimming. Crowds also begin to thin out, creating a quieter experience on the water.
Fall offers excellent wildlife viewing, comfortable hiking temperatures, and beautiful afternoon lighting throughout Black Canyon.
Winter (December–February)
Winter surprises many visitors. Southern Nevada winters are generally mild, and Emerald Cave remains open year-round.

If you don't mind a light jacket in the morning, winter can be one of the most peaceful times to visit.

While most guests skip swimming during winter, paddling conditions are often excellent thanks to sunny skies and generally stable weather.
How Wind Affects Emerald Cave
Unlike rain, wind is the weather condition that has the biggest impact on kayaking in Black Canyon.
A light breeze can make for a refreshing paddle, while stronger north or south winds can add more of a challenge—and for many paddlers, that's part of the adventure.
At Trek Las Vegas, we closely monitor wind forecasts throughout the day and adjust launch times whenever possible to give our guests the best experience on the river. On the rare occasion that conditions become unsafe, we'll always choose safety over pushing ahead with a tour.
The good news? Most mornings on the Colorado River are calm, making them ideal for beginners and anyone looking for a more relaxed paddle.
Does Rain Cancel Tours?
Rain itself is rarely a problem.
Southern Nevada receives very little annual rainfall, and light showers usually don't affect kayaking. Thunderstorms or dangerous weather are uncommon but may require schedule adjustments for safety.
When Does Emerald Cave Glow the Brightest?
The famous emerald color isn't created by artificial lighting—it's produced when sunlight enters the cave at the right angle and reflects through the clear Colorado River.
The best viewing time changes throughout the year as the sun's position shifts with the seasons. As a general guide:
- Spring (March–May): Approximately 11:00 AM–1:00 PM
- Summer (June–August): Approximately 12:00 PM–2:30 PM
- Fall (September–November): Approximately 11:00 AM–1:30 PM
- Winter (December–February): Approximately 10:30 AM–12:30 PM
These are only general timeframes, and the glow can vary from day to day depending on weather and lighting conditions.
